Our country spends millions on allergy medications, allergy shots, and other ways of dealing with seasonal allergies. And allergy sufferers are on the rise, in part due to increased contact with allergens (chemicals in our lawns, scented soaps, etc.), an increase in air pollution, and lifestyle habits (stress, fatigue, vitamin deficiencies, lack of exercise, etc.). These stressors trigger an excessive immune reaction to something that is normally harmless, an allergen. The most common allergens are pollen, ragweed, dust, mites, pet hair, and certain chemicals.
Allergies are often seasonal, but may be present year-round. While they affect people differently, typical symptoms include:
- Itchy eyes, palate, and/or nose
- Runny nose
- Sneezing
- Headaches
- Nasal congestion / Sinusitis
- Difficulty breathing
- Rashes
