Allergies & Acupuncture

Our country spends millions on allergy medications, allergy shots, and other ways of dealing with seasonal allergies. And allergy sufferers are on the rise, in part due to increased contact with allergens (chemicals in our lawns, scented soaps, etc.), an increase in air pollution, and lifestyle habits (stress, fatigue, vitamin deficiencies, lack of exercise, etc.). These stressors trigger an excessive immune reaction to something that is normally harmless, an allergen. The most common allergens are pollen, ragweed, dust, mites, pet hair, and certain chemicals. Allergies are often seasonal, but may be present year-round. While they affect people differently, typical symptoms include:
  • Itchy eyes, palate, and/or nose
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Headaches
  • Nasal congestion / Sinusitis
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Rashes
One of the best ways to both prevent and treat the effects of seasonal allergies is right here: Acupuncture. The World Health Organization (WHO) considers seasonal allergies, as well as asthma and sinusitis, as respiratory diseases that can be relieved with acupuncture. It’s gratifying for us to be able to treat seasonal allergies with acupuncture because there is often a quick and identifiable response. Many patients see relief DURING their first appointment when asked to compare their feeling of congestion before, during and after treatment. In Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) an allergic reaction is a manifestation of the body’s struggle to adjust to its environment. We, therefore, treat the allergic person, not the allergies. The goal of treatment is to calm the exaggerated response to the allergens and, even when symptoms are absent, to balance and strengthen any disharmony that could contribute to the problem. Acupuncture treatments for allergies, therefore, can be both preventative and therapeutic. If seasonal allergies are a known problem, it is ideal for the patient to seek care before the season starts or before the onset of symptoms. After an initial series of treatments, patients can return for further sessions as necessary. Some patients return once or twice a year for a tune-up, while others may do sessions more frequently. They may use acupuncture concurrently with other treatment methods like herbs, supplements, medications or shots, or they may find acupuncture alone enough to void their symptoms. In most cases, however, even patients who have had no benefit from medications or allergy shots DO respond to acupuncture. Recent science agrees. Studies demonstrate that acupuncture can have a positive impact on the body’s response to allergens by impacting both the nervous system and immune system. That’s because acupuncture stimulates the regulatory mechanisms and the transport of substances that can influence the body’s inflammatory, histamine, and immune response.
