Cell Speak: What Body Composition Can Tell Us About Our Overall Health

May 2, 2018 | Energy Medicine, Functional Medicine, Wellness

The importance of knowing our cellular health is quickly becoming a key marker of our overall health and wellbeing, and is supported by leading healthcare providers like Joseph Mercola. The great part is, we can tap into assessing it in a surprising easy and familiar way: Body Composition Analysis (or bioelectrical impedance analysis, BIA). Today’s BIA devices do so much more than just gauge the amount of body fat you carry. Those like the one we use can not only show you your body composition as it relates to fat tissue vs. muscle tissue, it can provide valuable insights about your skeletal mass, intracellular health, body water distribution, and phase angle values, all important to assessing overall health, vitality and precursors to potential health issues. Phase angle, in particular, is now a hot topic in health and perhaps the most widely used of these “markers” within the clinical nutrition community. According to InBody, our PhA (phase angle) is a direct measurement  of your cell membrane integrity, and the distribution of water within and outside the cell. In his book Supercharge Your Cell Vitality, author Dr. Greg Barsten refers to PhA as a fancy name for cell health. Cell membranes protect the integrity of the cell and regulate what goes in and out like a fortress. When we’re healthy, that membrane is great at preventing currents and unwanted materials like toxins and waste from entering the cells. Phase angle measurements examine the amount of water inside of cells to assess cellular integrity. This gives practitioners like us a more precise picture of your overall health and the kinds of therapeutic interventions where we can achieve the greatest impact. Higher phase angle values suggest greater cellular integrity and reflect better overall cell health.  Lower phase angles, on the other hand, demonstrate:
  • decreased muscle strength,
  • malnutrition,
  • infections,
  • impaired quality of life,
  • chronic alcoholism
  • age-related decline
By tracking body composition and muscle mass, as well as phase angle, we can help keep those cells happy through healthy lifestyle habits and appropriate therapeutic interventions. Since they provide clues to what’s going on inside your body, they can help identify and explain symptoms, highlight risk factors, and help you track your progress of lifestyle changes like diet and exercise. As a wellness center, measurements like these help us make data-driven health and wellness decisions so we can establish the best possible care plan. This month (May 2018), we’d love to provide you with your baseline body composition and phase angle value free of charge – just give us a call to schedule at 815-788-8383.
