Is Your Thyroid Working At Its Best?

The  hormone secreted by the thyroid gland is the key to ensuring every cell in the body is performing properly.  If the body doesn’t produce sufficient thyroid hormone, the cells will not function well, and ultimately the organs in the body will be affected.

Weight gain, inability to lose weight, low energy, brain fog, hair loss, dry hair and skin, depression, and constantly being cold are all symptoms of thyroid dysfunction in the body. While standard blood tests will look at two or three components of thyroid function, this is typically insufficient evidence to 1) understand the source of the problem and 2) recommend an targetted intervention to treat it. The comprehensive evaluation of thyroid function involves looking at up to ten markers in the blood which need to be included in the clinician’s laboratory order.

The thyroid gland in combination with the adrenals makes up the energy system for the body.  Treating the thyroid cannot be done effectively without looking at the adrenal gland. If the adrenals are depleted and slowing down, merely supplementing the thyroid without restoring adrenal function will not be effective, and in fact may just perpetuate the need for increasing doses of thyroid supplements!

The thyroid very rarely malfunctions on its own.  There are usually other underlying issues that cause the thyroid to malfunction.  One of which includes the status of microbiota in our gut, and/or the presence of “leaky gut”. Gut health is critical to a well-functioning thyroid, adrenal glands and the entire body, for that matter, and addressing this can make significant improvement in both adrenal, thyroid function and your overall health. Taking a quality probiotic with sufficient microorganisms is the first step in improving gut health.

Once sufficient information is received by evaluating markers in the blood and cortisol in the urine, intervention and treatment can be customized to address the imbalances identified.  This may include Chinese herbs, a tailored plan for supplements and in some cases thyroid hormones that a physician would need to prescribe.
